Thousands took to the streets in Turkey last night to protest the arrest of Recep Tayyip Erdoğan’s main political opponent.
Wide-spread demonstrations have taken place throughout the country over the past three days following the arrest of Ekrem Imamoglu, the mayor of Istanbul, on Wednesday.
Protests in Istanbul, Ankara and the western city of Izmir resulted in violent clashes between demonstrators and riot police, who fired tear gas, rubber bullets and water cannon into the crowds.
Police raided scores of homes overnight with 343 people reportedly detained.
