Hamas response to Gaza plan ‘could take days’

Hamas’s response to the US-led and Israeli-backed Gaza peace plan could take days, a source close to the group said.

Donald Trump, with Israel’s backing, announced on Monday that he would oversee a transitional government in the Strip alongside Sir Tony Blair as part of his 20-point plan for “eternal peace in the Middle East”.

The Palestinian terror group is currently reviewing the deal in “good faith” after being presented with its terms last night, sources close to Hamas said. The group will discuss the deal with Qatar and Turkey later today.

“Hamas has begun a series of consultations within its political and military leaderships, both inside Palestine and abroad,” the source told AFP.

“The discussions could take several days due to the complexities of communication among leadership members and movements, especially after the Israeli aggression in Doha,” the source added, referring to Israeli strikes on the Qatari capital that targeted Hamas leaders earlier this month.

Speaking on Tuesday, the US president said the terror group had three or four days to accept the proposal.

“Hamas is either going to be doing it or not, and if it’s not, it’s going to be a very sad end,” he said.

Asked if there was room for negotiations on the peace plan, Mr Trump said: “Not much.”

Mr Trump’s proposal calls for a ceasefire and the release of all hostages by Hamas within 72 hours, as well as the terror group’s disarmament and Israel’s gradual withdrawal from the Strip. A post-war transitional authority ran by Mr Trump and known as the Board of Peace would also be established.

Benjamin Netanyahu, who will discuss the plan with his cabinet this evening, warned that if Hamas rejected the proposal, “then Israel will finish the job by itself”.
