Hamas poses greatest terrorist threat since Isis, FBI chief warns

Hamas poses the greatest terror threat since ISIS, the director of the FBI has warned.

Christopher Wray said on Tuesday that the Israel-Hamas war has raised the threat of attacks to “a whole other level” and would serve as “inspiration” to jihadists operating in the United States and across the Western world.

“We assess that the actions of Hamas and its allies will serve as an inspiration the likes of which we haven’t seen since Isis launched its so-called caliphate several years ago,” he told the Senate Committee on Homeland Security.

“We also cannot and do not discount the possibility that Hamas or another foreign terrorist organisation may exploit the current conflict to conduct attacks here on our own soil.”

Mr Wray said the most significant threat was to Jewish and Muslim communities in the United States.

“Our most immediate concern is that violent extremists, individuals or small groups, will draw inspiration from the events of the Middle East and carry out attacks against Americans going about their daily lives,” he added.

Appearing alongside Mr Wray, Alejandro Mayorkas, the Homeland Security secretary, said hate directed at Jewish students following the start of the Israel-Hamas conflict in Gaza has added to an increase in anti-Semitism.

The White House expressed alarm this week at reports of anti-Jewish incidents at US universities, including several in New York, that prompted university officials to tighten security.

“Hate directed at Jewish students, communities, and institutions add to a preexisting increase in the level of anti-Semitism in the United States and around the world,” Mr Mayorkas said.

The pair’s remarks came against the backdrop of an appeal by president Joe Biden for Congress to authorise a $106bn (£87.4bn) package of foreign support, including $14bn for Israel, $61bn for Ukraine and $7.4bn for the Indo-Pacific, including Taiwan.

At a separate hearing on Tuesday, US secretary of state Antony Blinken warned that failure to authorise the spending package would see hostile foreign actors take advantage of America’s decision to stand back.

“We now stand at a moment where many are again making the bet that the United States is too divided or distracted at home to stay the course,” he told the Senate Appropriations Committee hearing.

“That is what is at stake,” Mr Blinken added.

He also accused Russian president Vladimir Putin of trying to use the Israel-Hamas war to reduce Western support for Ukraine.

Washington has rushed military aid to Israel and bolstered its forces in the wider region following Hamas’ October 7 attack, sparking fears in Kyiv that support for its war against invading Russian forces could dwindle.

“Putin is very much trying to take advantage of the Hamas attack on Israel in the hopes that it will distract us... and that it will result in the United States pulling back its resources” from Ukraine, Mr Blinken said.

His appearance at the committee was interrupted by pro-Palestinian protesters daubed in fake blood.

More than 20 spectators raised their hands, which had been covered in red paint to symbolise blood, as Mr Blinken spoke.

Several had “Free Gaza” written on their arms, and some held signs demanding “No more $$$ 4 Israel”.

Others cried out: “Ceasefire now”, “Palestinians are not animals” and “Shame on you all”.

Mr Blinken was forced to stop speaking several times as some demonstrators were escorted out of the room by police.
