General election latest: Reform racism incident 'shows what party really is', says Tom Tugendhat

Tom Tugendhat, the security minister, has said he wants to remind voters what Reform “really is” after a scandal in which a party canvasser used a racial slur to refer to the Prime Minister.

He told Times Radio: “There’s many decent people vote for every political party and there’s many decent people who will vote for Reform.

“But what we’re trying to do is to remind people, to try to make clear to people, what it is that Reform really is.”

He also said Nigel Farage, the Reform UK leader, has “clearly done almost no due diligence on who he’s asking to carry his message”.

“There is a real pattern of racist and misogynistic views in the party. I think it’s absolutely right to call it out,” he added.

Footage from an undercover Channel 4 reporter showed Reform campaigner Andrew Parker using a discriminatory term about the Prime Minister.

Mr Parker has since called himself a “total fool” and said he has learned his lesson.

Rishi Sunak, the Prime Minister, said on Friday that Mr Parker’s words had left him “hurt and angry”.

Speaking on a campaign visit to a school in Teesside, Mr Sunak said: “My two daughters have to see and hear Reform people who campaign for Nigel Farage calling me an effing p---.

“It hurts and it makes me angry, and I think he has some questions to answer.”
