The Gaza ceasefire and hostage exchange announced in Doha is to be celebrated – but don’t expect it to bring immediate relief.

The deal that has at last been signed is a complex and fragile one, full of tripwires and minefields that have yet to be navigated.

Even if it runs smoothly – and it’s hard to believe it will, given the blood, land and politics at stake – it will be at least four and a half months (18 weeks) before it is complete and the real processes of reconstruction and reconciliation can begin.

While for some families it will bring immediate joy, for others the process will dash the last embers of hope as loved ones are returned broken or in body bags.

In total, Hamas and other Gazan terrorist factions are thought to be holding 98 hostages, including the bodies of at least 36 already confirmed dead by Israel.
