Friends stars and family gather for Matthew Perry’s funeral

Matthew Perry has been laid to rest in Los Angeles, with all five of his Friends co-stars attending the service to say an emotional goodbye.

His funeral was held at Forest Lawn Church of the Hills, just down the road from the Warner Bros studio where Perry and his castmates filmed the iconic series for 10 years.

The ceremony in Los Angeles appeared to be a small and intimate event with about 20 or so people in attendance, TMZ reported.

Perry’s co-stars, Jennifer Aniston, Lisa Kudrow, Courteney Cox, and David Schwimmer, were all dressed in black as they arrived at the church as a group. Matt LeBlanc also attended the two-hour-long service, joining Matthew’s father, John Bennett Perry, and stepfather, Keith Morrison.

Photos showed mourners comforting one another on the lawn at the funeral home.

The cemetery is the final resting place of a galaxy of Hollywood stars – among them Carrie Fisher, Bette Davis, Stan Laurel, Buster Keaton, Anne Heche and  INXS frontman Michael Hutchence.

His funeral service reportedly ended with a rendition of Peter Gabriel song ‘Don’t Give Up’ which includes the lyrics: ‘No fight left or so it seems, I am a man whose dreams have all deserted, I’ve changed my face, I’ve changed my name, But no one wants you when you lose.’

The final farewell comes after Perry, 54, was found unresponsive in a jacuzzi at his Los Angeles home last Saturday. He was loved around the world for playing Chandler Bing on Friends.

Perry’s co-stars shared a joint statement days after his death saying: “We are all so utterly devastated by the loss of Matthew. We were more than just cast mates. We are a family. There is so much to say, but right now we’re going to take a moment to grieve and process this unfathomable loss.”

Perry was open about his battle with substance abuse and addiction, and also set up a sober living facility for men with similar issues.

A foundation has now been established to help others struggling with the disease.

The Matthew Perry Foundation “will honour his legacy and be guided by his own words and experiences and driven by his passion for making a difference in as many lives as possible,” according to its website.

It quotes Perry saying: “When I die, I don’t want ‘Friends’ to be the first thing that’s mentioned – I want helping others to be the first thing that’s mentioned.”

The cause and manner of Perry’s death are to be determined by the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner’s Office, following the completion of an autopsy with toxicology tests.
