Foreign drivers urged to display ‘T-plates’ after rise in crashes

Tourists in the Scottish Highlands are being urged to display “T-plates” on their cars following a spate of crashes.

The signs, which feature a green letter “T” and have “tourist” written at the bottom, aim to alert others that the driver might not be familiar with Scotland’s roads.

Robert Marshall, a Kingussie-based hotelier, created the T-plates after his own “awful” driving experience in Tenerife left him “completely stressed out”.

They are available for purchase online and it is understood they are legal to display.

Official figures released in May showed the number of crashes in Scotland caused by motorists driving on the wrong side of the road had increased by 46 per cent in a year.

Transport Scotland said the number of collisions caused by “inexperience of driving on the left” had increased sharply, from 24 in 2022 to 35 the following year.

Several foreign drivers have been killed in crashes in recent years, including tourists from the US, Italy and Germany.
