Flight restrictions are set to be put in place across the South and South East of England on the day of the King's Coronation, due to a planned 60-plane flypast.

Mark Harper, the Transport Secretary has now issued a ban on aircraft from flying below certain heights in areas near to where the flypast will take place.

More than 60 aircraft from the Royal Navy, British Army and Royal Air Force - including the Red Arrows - will take part in a six-minute flypast over The Mall at 2.15pm on the afternoon of the Coronation.

Restrictions on aircraft not taking part will be in place in airspace above parts of London, East Anglia and the North Sea at various times from 12.15pm until 2pm.

A note sent out by the Civil Aviation Authority and air traffic control service Nats stated: “Due to the large number of aircraft involved (in the flypast), the Secretary of State for Transport has decided that it is necessary to introduce restriction of flying regulations.”

No impact on commercial flights

It is understood that this will have an impact on light aircraft pilots and drone users, but not commercial flights. This means that flights from Heathrow and London City airport will be exempt.

Last year Heathrow cancelled more than 100 flights on the day of Queen Elizabeth’s funeral to avoid any noise during the two minutes of silence during the ceremony.

All flights due to take off 15 minutes before and 15 minutes after the 11.55am silence were grounded.

Aircraft operated by the emergency services such as the Maritime Coastguard and the National Police Air Service will be exempt.

Once the flypast has been completed aircraft will disperse across airspace above parts of London, East Anglia and the North Sea at various times from 12.15pm until 2pm.

Restrictions have also been announced for parts of East Anglia, Lincolnshire and the North Sea on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday due to flypast rehearsals.
