Five die in Israeli airstrike on Gaza hospital tent camp

An Israeli airstrike hit a tent camp housing displaced Palestinians in a hospital complex early on Sunday, killing at least five and injuring 18, Gaza’s authorities said.

Footage showed men rushing to the scene inside the courtyard of the Al-Aqsa Martyrs Hospital to help the wounded and retrieve bodies as fire tore through tents.

The hospital in Deir al-Balah is the main medical facility operating in central Gaza, where thousands have taken shelter after fleeing their homes elsewhere in the war-ravaged territory.

A separate strike on Sunday flattened a house in northern Gaza, killing at least eight people, including three children, their parents and their grandmother, according to Gaza’s Hamas-run health ministry.

On Saturday, an Israeli strike on a school-turned-shelter in Gaza City killed at least 16 people and wounded another 21, the ministry said.

Israel’s military, which regularly accuses Hamas of taking shelter in civilian areas, said the school was being used as a terror command centre to hide militants and manufacture weapons.

Israel’s bombardment and ground offensive inside Gaza has killed at least 39,550 people, according to the territory’s authorities, which do not differentiate between civilians and militants in tallies.

The weekend’s attacks on Gaza come as the region teeters closer to a wider war following the assassination of Ismail Haniyeh, Hamas’s political chief, in Tehran and the killing of a senior commander of Iran-backed Hezbollah in Beirut last week.

Israel has neither denied nor claimed responsibility for Haniyeh’s death, which has thrown into doubt ongoing ceasefire negotiations and sparked promises for revenge from Iran.

Benjamin Netanyahu, Israel’s prime minister, has accused Hamas of trying to add changes to the “outline” of a ceasefire proposal that Joe Biden, the US president, laid out in May, while Hamas has blamed Mr Netanyahu, saying he does not want to stop the war.
