Jimmy Fallon said his show has “never been political” as he sought to distance himself from a free speech row with Donald Trump.
The NBC Tonight Show host said that he tries to “hit both sides equally” and keep his “head down” after fellow late night show host Jimmy Kimmel was suspended following threats from the Trump administration.
“Our show’s never really been that political, you know. We hit both sides equally, and we try to make everybody laugh, and that’s really the way our show really works,” he told CNBC, in an attempt to sidestep the fallout.
“I mean, our monologues are kind of the same that we’ve been doing since Johnny Carson was doing The Tonight Show. So, really, I just keep my head down and make sure the jokes are funny.”
Last month, Jimmy Kimmel was taken off air for a week by ABC after Brendan Carr, head of the FCC, warned the network over Kimmel’s remarks about Charlie Kirk’s killing..
“We can do this the easy way or the hard way,” he said. “These companies can find ways to change conduct, to take action, frankly, on Kimmel, or there is going to be additional work for the FCC ahead.” Carr later denied threatening to revoke ABC’s broadcasting licenses if Kimmel wasn’t fired.
