An elderly former Stasi guard has been jailed for 10 years after he was found guilty of killing a Polish man as he attempted to flee to West Berlin during the Cold War.
Martin Naumann, now 80, shot Czeslaw Kukuczka in the back as he tried to flee across the Friedrichstrasse checkpoint into West Berlin in 1974.
On Monday, a court in Berlin recognised that Naumann had been following orders from his superiors when he opened fire, but still convicted him of murder.
