Emmanuel Macron and the leaders of Albania and Azerbaijan were caught mocking Donald Trump after he mixed up Armenia and Albania.
The US president has repeatedly confused the two countries while discussing his attempts to solve deep-rooted tensions between Armenia and Azerbaijan – and it has become a source of amusement among world leaders.
Edi Rama, the Albanian prime minister, was filmed teasing Mr Macron and Ilham Aliyev, Azerbaijan’s president, over the mix-up at the European Political Community meeting in Copenhagen on Thursday.
With his hand on Mr Macron’s shoulder, he joked: “You should make an apology… to us because you didn’t congratulate us on the peace deal that President Trump made between Albania and Azerbaijan.”
Mr Aliyev then began laughing, while Mr Macron smiled and said: “I am sorry for that.”
The US president brokered a deal between Armenia and Azerbaijan at the White House in August, with the two leaders pledging to respect each other’s territorial integrity and formally put an end to nearly four decades of conflict.
