Elon Musk predicted on Monday that the far-Right AfD would win power in Germany in 2029, as he congratulated its leader on an unprecedented election result.

The tech billionaire praised Alice Weidel, whose party won 20 per cent of the vote and came second to the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) in Sunday’s federal election.

Mr Musk, who enthusiastically promoted Alternative for Germany (AfD) throughout the election campaign, wrote on X: “Congratulations Alice Weidel! At this rate of growth, AfD will be the majority party by the next election.”

A beaming Ms Weidel told reporters she had woken on Monday morning to a missed call from the Tesla chief executive. 

Both Mr Musk and JD Vance, the US vice-president, have raged against an “anti-democratic” firewall erected by establishment parties to keep the AfD from power.
