Donald Trump has brutally exposed modern Europe’s innate weakness

SIR – Although America is irrevocably tied through history to Europe, it is not appropriate for it to bail us out every time. That Donald Trump appears able to dictate European foreign policy is a clear demonstration of how weak Europe has become.

This is partly because Europe hasn’t got a foreign policy, or any resolve to take independent action as a unified entity. It is a good example of how Europe can only work as an economic union, and will never be any more.

SIR – Daniel Hannan (Comment, February 16) concedes that we must choose between Europe and America, dropping the Brexiteer fiction that we can have it all.

However, in a relationship with America we would be a vassal – subservient, with no leverage. In Europe we would (and did) exert considerable influence.

To leave the EU on grounds of sovereignty and foreign control of our affairs, and then promote subjugation to America, is illogical and bizarre.

SIR – What the American administration is doing to Europe is shocking and dangerous. After a decade in India, we are now determined to come home to Britain to play a part in defending our country from tyrants.

The British public should be under no illusions about the risks we face. But we have a proud tradition of facing things together.
