Donald Trump hails ‘greatest victory’ as he thrashes Nikki Haley on Super Tuesday

Donald Trump has declared victory over Nikki Haley after winning all nine of the first Super Tuesday states to report results in the Republican primary.

The former president sent a “victory memo” to his supporters, thanking them for voting in the 15 primary elections happening across the US.

“We achieved our GREATEST VICTORY to date, and I have just two words,” he said. “THANK YOU! THANK YOU! THANK YOU!”

Mr Trump has won the states of North Carolina, Virginia, Oklahoma, Maine and Tennessee, with early results showing a disappointing night for Ms Haley.

He will also win in Massachusetts, Texas, Alabama and Arkansas, the Associated Press news agency projected.

The former president will give a speech from his Mar-a-Lago resort later on Tuesday evening, while Ms Haley has returned to her home state of South Carolina and is not expected to make a public appearance.

The early wins for the former president were widely predicted by opinion polls, but Ms Haley’s campaign had hoped she would win in Massachusetts, which has a large number of educated voters that are statistically more likely to vote for her.

However, Mr Trump is heading for a clean sweep of all fifteen states, taking him closer to the 1,234 delegates he needs to secure the Republican nomination.

That result would make it difficult for Ms Haley’s campaign to continue, and leave her with just one primary win in Washington DC.

Karoline Leavitt, a spokeswoman for Mr Trump, told the Telegraph the campaign was “feeling really confident” on the back of Tuesday’s sweep.

“Tonight’s going to be an avalanche of delegates for President Trump and it’s one step closer to him becoming the official nominee of the Republican Party,” she said.

“We are already 100 per cent focused on taking the fight to Joe Biden and the Democrats in November.”
