Several divers have been arrested in Ireland for alleged drug smuggling, with police now hunting for cocaine shipments they believe have been hidden underwater.
Ireland is used as a route by South American cartels, working with Irish gangs, to move drugs into the UK and Europe.
Senior gardai believe they have thwarted a major smuggling pipeline in West Cork and are searching for an inflatable boat that was used off the coast near Skibbereen in recent days.
Officers believe caches of cocaine were stashed underwater off the south-west coast of Ireland until the gang thought it was safe to bring them into land.
The waterproofed consignments are electronically tagged so they can be found and retrieved by divers in smaller, safer quantities than one large shipment of narcotics.
No drugs have yet been found.
