Northern Ireland’s most senior police officer has admitted that dissident republicans have claimed to be in possession of a leaked police database.

Simon Byrne admitted the leak containing&nbsp;details&nbsp;of 10,000 officers and staff was on an “industrial scale” and that the force would likely face financial penalties from regulators or in compensation claims.

<a href="https://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2023/08/10/simon-byrne-psni-chief-constable-refuses-quit-data-leak/">Describing it as a “worst case scenario”</a>, Mr Byrne said: “We are now aware that dissident republicans claim to be in possession of some of this information circulating on WhatsApp, and as we speak we are advising officers and staff about how to deal with that and any further risk that they face.”
