Sean “Diddy” Combs has begged a judge for mercy in a grovelling letter ahead of his sentencing today.
The music mogul, who was found guilty of two prostitution-related charges but cleared of the most serious allegations against him in July, apologised for “all the hurt and pain I have caused” and claimed to have been “reborn” in prison.
Combs has remained in prison since arrest on Sept 17, 2024. His request for bail after the verdict was read in July was denied by a judge.
Prosecutors are seeking a sentence of at least 11 years, but Combs’ legal team have asked for 14 months, which taking in the time he has already served would see him released before Christmas.
In a letter submitted to the court, Combs apologised for assaulting his ex-girlfriend Cassie Ventura, who gave evidence against him during the case, saying: “My domestic violence will always be a heavy burden that I will have to forever carry.”
In July, Combs fell to his knees after being acquitted of racketeering conspiracy and sex trafficking by the New York jury.
In the letter submitted today, Combs asked the judge for mercy, “not only for my sake but for the sake of my children”, and his 84-year-old mother.
“I lost my way,” he wrote. “My downfall was rooted in my selfishness. I have been humbled and broken to my core.”
Prosecutors said the rapper remains “unrepentant”.
In her own letter to the court, Ventura said Combs had “no interest in changing or becoming better” and that his first move would be “swift retribution towards me and others” once free.
Combs’ sentencing is slated to take place at 3pm UK (10am local time).
