SIR – Am I alone in considering that Donald Trump’s suggestion to the democratically elected president of sovereign Ukraine – that he dissolve his country’s government and hold a general election (report, February 19) – is akin to claiming during the Second World War that Churchill was leading Britain illegitimately, and that we should have conducted elections to find a more suitable, pliable appeaser before being subjugated, rather than standing up to bullying and tyranny?

SIR – Russia’s recent allies have included Belarus, Iran, North Korea and China. Following Donald Trump’s suggestion that Ukraine started the war, is the United States now adding itself to this list of dubious regimes?
Ken Himsworth

SIR – Given Donald Trump’s position on Ukraine, if Mexico demanded control of Arizona, New Mexico and California, he would presumably do a deal and only give up Arizona and New Mexico, proclaiming that he had saved America by not conceding California.

SIR – How excited we all were: a new American president with vision and drive. Unfortunately, Donald Trump is now driving on the wrong side of the road.
How quickly someone can go from hero to delusional zero.

SIR – Is Mr Trump hoping to hand Ukraine to Russia in return for an uncontested run at Greenland?

SIR – Donald Trump has bought the West valuable time. We must use it to double the size of our Armed Forces and repurpose them for the 21st century. If we value our freedom, we must be prepared to defend it. We cannot rely on America for protection – nor on our European allies, who bend with the wind.

SIR – European leaders need to back Volodymyr Zelensky, stand up to Donald Trump, insist on Ukraine’s presence in talks and secure the eastern borders against a bully.
George Adams
Brading, Isle of Wight
SIR – Does Nigel Farage agree with his friend Donald Trump’s suggestion that Ukraine started the war? He will need to have the courage to publicly distance himself from Mr Trump’s claim if he has any chance of building credibility with potential Reform UK voters. This one doesn’t support bullies, be they Russian or American.
