The man accused of killing Charlie Kirk is facing the death penalty after being formally charged with murder.

Tyler Robinson, 22, is accused of murdering Kirk, 31, with a single shot to the throat as he addressed a crowd of Utah Valley University students last week.

The charges were announced by Jeff Gray, the Utah county attorney general, on Tuesday. Here are five key takeaways from the press conference.

Suspect became ‘more pro trans’ and clashed with ‘Maga dad’

Mr Robinson had become increasingly political and “had started to lean more to the Left, becoming more pro gay and trans rights oriented,” his mother told prosecutors.

The 22-year-old student was in a relationship with his roommate, a biological male who was transgender.

The alleged killer had also begun to clash increasingly with his conservative father.

His mother told law enforcement that Mr Robinson’s relationship with his transgender roommate “resulted in several discussions with family members, but especially between Robinson and his father, who have very different political views”.

In a text exchange, he allegedly told his partner after the shooting: “Since Trump got into office, my dad has been pretty die-hard Maga.”
