Charlie Kirk’s alleged assassin confessed to shooting the conservative influencer to his trans lover, according to text messages recovered by detectives.
Tyler Robinson, 22, had become “more political and had started to lean more to the Left, becoming more pro-gay and trans rights oriented,” prosecutors revealed on Tuesday, as they announced they would seek the death penalty in the case.
Mr Robinson is charged with murdering the Republican podcaster and top Trump ally by firing a single bullet from a rooftop 130 metres from where he was hosting a debate at Utah Valley University last week.
Jeff Gray, the Utah county attorney general, said Mr Robinson admitted to shooting Kirk in a text exchange with his trans partner and roommate and left a note under his computer keyboard which said: “I had the opportunity to take out Charlie Kirk and I’m going to take it.”
After the killing, Mr Robinson instructed his roommate to delete their lengthy text exchange and not speak to police, according to prosecutors.
“I had enough of his hatred,” Mr Robinson said of Kirk. “Some hate can’t be negotiated out,” he added.
