The man accused of assassinating Charlie Kirk told his transgender lover he had killed the conservative influencer, police have said.

Tyler Robinson, 22, was in a relationship with a biological male who was transitioning into a woman, whom he also lived with, Jeff Gray, Utah’s county attorney, said.

Before Kirk, 31, was shot while addressing a crowd of students at Utah Valley University, Mr Robinson allegedly wrote in a note that he left for his partner: “I have the opportunity to take out Charlie Kirk and I’m going to take it.”

Mr Robinson’s roommate, who has not been named, appeared to believe he was joking, apparently saying: “You weren’t the one who did it right????”

Mr Robinson replied: “I am, I’m sorry,” according to police.

He later allegedly added: “I had enough of his hatred. Some hate can’t be negotiated out. If I am able to grab my rifle unseen, I will have left no evidence.”

Mr Robinson is facing the death penalty after being charged with murder.

He is also charged with discharging a firearm, two counts of obstructing justice, two counts of witness tampering relating to texts he asked his roommate to delete, and committing a violent act in front of children.
