Comic actor Mike Myers has joined Canada’s new prime minister in an “elbows up” show of defiance against Donald Trump, as elections beckon.
Mark Carney released a video alongside the Austin Powers star vowing there would “always be a Canada”, and using the “elbows up” slogan, which has become a rallying cry in the face of annexation threats and punitive tariffs from the US.
The patriotic video was released on Sunday hours before Mr Carney announced a snap election for April 28.
Mr Carney, a former Bank of England governor, said he wanted a “strong, positive mandate from my fellow Canadians” and that “there is so much more to do to secure Canada”.
The trade war with America is one of the “most significant threats of our lifetimes”, he added.
“He [Trump] wants to break us so America will own us. We will not let that happen.”
Relations between Canada and the US have plummeted as Mr Trump has made jibes about the Commonwealth member becoming America’s 51st state.
America has also enacted hefty tariffs and accused Canada of failing to stop the highly addictive opioid fentanyl crossing the border.
