Maasai tribes people are being uprooted to make way for lucrative carbon credit and conservation schemes, activists say.

Tanzania’s government has begun evicting some of the more than 110,000 Maasai from the Ngorongoro conservation area, saying their growing numbers are a threat to the famed savannas and watering holes.

But the tribe’s people and their supporters say the relocation is the latest example of a government elbowing out locals as they try to secure international money from conservation, tourism and climate initiatives.

“The government is doing everything possible to suffocate local communities in order to earn more money from tourism and trophy-hunting,” Moloimet Olemoko, a Maasai herder from Ngorongoro told the Wall Street Journal.

“They are not bothered about the livelihoods of the Maasai.”
