Mark Carney will go head-to-head with Pierre Poilievre and Canada’s other political leaders in a federal election debate tonight.
Mr Carney, who took over from Justin Trudeau as Canadian prime minister last month, is likely to win enough seats to remain in office and win a fourth term for the Liberals, polling predicts.
It puts Mr Poilievre, the Conservative leader, under pressure to produce an impressive performance before Canadians head to the polls on April 28.
The election has been dominated by Donald Trump, after the US president declared a trade war on Canada and openly mulled about annexing the country as the America’s “51st state”.
The intervention was bad news for Mr Poilievre, often compared to Mr Trump, who has seen his party’s 20 point poll lead evaporate in recent months.
Tonight’s event is the second iteration of the leaders’ event, with a French-language debate between the leadership hopefuls having taken place on Wednesday.
