British female suspect named in attempted assassination plot against Vox founder in Spain

A British woman arrested in Spain this week alongside her partner in connection with the shooting of a Right-wing politician has been named.

According to Spanish television station TeleCinco, Sasha Brooks, believed to be in her mid-20s, was arrested on Tuesday with boyfriend Naraya Gómez, a Spanish citizen, and both are being held by Spanish police.

The pair are suspects in an apparent assassination attempt against Alejo Vidal-Quadras, who was shot in the face in Madrid on Nov 9.

The 78-year-old former vice-president of the European Parliament and co-founder of the far-Right Vox party is recovering in hospital after surgery on a smashed jaw.

Mr Vidal-Quadras has blamed Iran for trying to kill him over his political campaigning against the Tehran regime and support for an exiled opposition group.

Mr Gómez, who is reported to be a convert to Shia Islam, was spotted visiting Madrid’s wealthy Salamanca neighbourhood where the shooting took place around the time of the attack and on previous days.

According to the  El País newspaper, investigators believe Mr Gómez hired a gunman, believed to be a Tunisian resident in France.

Mr Gómez is also thought to have paid a man from Mijas near Malaga, who has also been arrested, to buy the motorcycle used by the gunman to ride away from the scene of the crime. The bike was found later partially burned and its registration number could not be identified.

The police have said they are unsure of whether Ms Brooks had any involvement in or knowledge of the shooting or its preparation.

She was arrested along with Mr Gómez in a house they were renting in Lanjarón, near Granada, where they both worked for Pension Life. Ms Brooks’s mother, Angie Brooks, is the CEO of the firm.

According to its website, Pension Life was launched as part of a class action lawsuit brought by pensioners who had been victims of a scam in Spain.

Mr Gómez and Ms Brooks are expected to appear in court in Madrid, where a judge will decide whether or not to remand them in custody.
