In the latest indication that a Brexit deal is imminent, Ursula von der Leyen, the president of the European Commission, is set to meet Rishi Sunak on Monday for “final talks” on the Northern Ireland Protocol.
Here is a rough breakdown of how the day will play out.
Late lunchtime
The action will kick off at “late lunchtime”, when the leaders meet to smooth out any remaining kinks in the deal.
Number 10 said the Prime Minister wants to ensure that any agreement struck between the UK and EU fixes “practical problems” on the ground in the province.
It should also ensure that trade flows freely within the whole of the UK and “returns sovereignty” to the people of Northern Ireland.
Afternoon
In the afternoon, once those talks have concluded, there will be a meeting of the Cabinet.
Here, the Prime Minister; James Cleverly, the Foreign Secretary; and Chris Heaton-Harris, the Northern Ireland Secretary, will update on the discussions.
This will build upon updates that Mr Sunak’s top team have received throughout the process.
If a final deal is struck, Mr Sunak and Mrs Von der Leyen will hold a “short joint press conference” late in the afternoon.
The Prime Minister will then head to the House of Commons to deliver a statement on the agreement.
