Betting scandal worse for the Tories than Rishi’s D-Day blunder | Westminster Source

The date of this year’s general election has been a talking point since the start of 2024.

When Rishi Sunak surprised the nation by announcing polling day for July 4, it ended months of speculation.

Now, in the final week of the campaign, the date sits at the centre of a betting scandal that continues to draw attention away from policy debates

Those who have found themselves looked into by the Gambling Commission for bets about the election date include Conservatives close to Mr Sunak. It remains to be seen if any action is taken by the Commission.

As he reflects on the campaign as a whole, Ben Riley-Smith, The Telegraph’s Political Editor, evaluates how damaging the scandal has been and why it cuts to the heart of a Tory weakness.
