Amy Winehouse statue’s Star of David covered with pro-Palestine sticker

A statue of Jewish singer Amy Winehouse wearing a Star of David pendant has been “defaced” with a pro-Palestine sticker.

The sculpture, which depicts the late star with a hand on her hip, was unveiled in Stables Market, Camden, close to where she lived in her last few years.

It was erected in her memory in 2014, three years after her death.

Pictures shared to social media showed the pendant, with a round Palestine flag sticker stuck over the Star of David symbol.

The Star is a symbol of Jewish identity.

‘Statue stood undisturbed for years’

Heidi Bachram, an author, wrote on Twitter: “The Amy Winehouse statue has stood undisturbed and respected for years.

“It has a star of David necklace out and proud. Until today when a pro-Palestinian defaced her Jewishness with a sticker. This is gross anti-Semitism.”

She later added: “Whoever defaced the Amy Winehouse statue did it with the intention to cover up her Jewishness. They didn’t put it on her top. They put it over her Star of David. Stop denying. We are not stupid.”

The Campaign Against Antisemitism said: “A sticker of the Palestinian Authority flag has been stuck over the Star of David on the Amy Winehouse statue in Camden.

“But this is just ‘criticism of Israel’, right?”

Winehouse film being made

A film about Winehouse, who died aged 27 due to accidental alcohol poisoning, is currently being made.

Back to Black, which is set to come out this year, will attempt to document her successful music career as she battled heroin and cocaine addiction.

The six-time Grammy award winner was born to a Jewish family in north London with roots in east London.

The London Jewish Museum put on an exhibition in its then-home in Camden called Amy Winehouse: A Family Portrait in 2013.

It was co-curated by her family and included memorabilia from her life and career.

A Camden Market spokesperson said: “We were made aware that a member of the public had placed a sticker over the Star of David necklace on the Amy Winehouse statue in the North Yard of Camden Market.

“This was removed immediately, and the incident was reported to the police. Camden Market remains first and foremost, a place of diversity – a global destination that welcomes everyone. Any form of discrimination on our estate will not be tolerated.”

The Metropolitan Police were contacted for comment.
