Department of Health and Human Services assistant secretary Rachel Levine said that sex-change procedures would be required to ensure that children do not go through the “wrong puberty.”
Levine, a biological male who identifies as a transgender female, was asked in a Friday interview on ABC why sex-change treatments should not be reserved for adults.
“Adolescence is hard and puberty is hard,” Levine said. “What if you’re going through the wrong puberty? What if you, inside, feel that you are female but now you’re going through a male puberty?”
The Biden official added that medical interventions before puberty were not recommended. “I want to make it clear that for pre-pubertal children, there are no medical procedures done.”
Levine’s comments come as over 20 states have banned puberty blockers and hormone replacement for children.
Levine has continually advocated for providing children with sex-change treatments, stating in an interview last month that “gender-affirming care is literally suicide-prevention care.”
Levine has received plaudits for identifying as transgender, with Chelsea Clinton even publishing a children’s book telling Levine’s story.
