The federal government has seized 13 domains that were identified as being used by, or on behalf of, terrorists – and many of them were being presented as “news” pages.
The Department of Justice said it grabbed the domains because they were being used by “Specially Designated Nationals,” Specially Designated Global Terrorists” or their “members associated with Lebanese Hezbollah.”
Among the names seized were moqawama.org, almanarnews.org, manarnews.org, almanar-tv.org, alshahid.org, manartv.net, manarnews.net, almanar-tv.com, almanar-tv.net, alidaamouch.com, Ibrahim-alsayed.net, alemdad.net, and naimkassem.net.
The fact is terror groups historically sometimes self-describe as news organizations or journalists.
And the Biden administration has established a record for mischaracterizing conservative groups, such as concerned parents at school board meetings, as terrorists.
“Today’s web domain seizures deny terrorist organizations and affiliates significant sources of support and makes clear we will not allow these groups to use U.S. infrastructure to threaten the American people,” said Matthew G. Olsen, of the Justice Department’s National Security Division.
“The Justice Department will continue to enforce economic sanctions as part of our commitment to deploy all available tools against threats from hostile nation-states and terrorist actors alike.”
“This seizure demonstrates the FBI’s persistence in using all of our tools to hold accountable terrorists and their affiliates when they violate U.S. laws,” said FBI spokesman Robert R. Wells. “The FBI, along with our international partners, will continue to seek out those individuals who contribute to the advancement of Lebanese Hezbollah’s malign activities and ensure they are brought to justice, regardless of where, or how, they attempt to hide.”
Matthew Axelrod of the Department of Commerce explained the move “reduces Hezbollah’s ability to peddle their dangerous violent ideology.”
The DOJ explained, “Pursuant to the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA), SDNs and SDGTs, such as Lebanese Hezbollah, Al Manar TV, Ali Damush, Ibrahim al-Sayyid, Islamic Charitable Emdad Committee, Martyrs’ Foundation in Lebanon, Naim Qasim, and their members may not obtain services, including website and domain services, in the United States without a license from the Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC). No such license was obtained for any of the 13 seized domains.”
