About 300,000 immigrants are affected by the decision. They were previously given safe haven in the United States as a result of deteriorating economic and political dynamics in Venezuela. That status allowed them to live and work in the United States legally.
The court’s liberal justices opposed the decision. Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson, in a solo written dissent, faulted the court’s majority for “wordlessly” siding with the Trump administration and discarding the lengthy determinations made by several lower-court judges who had blocked the administration’s bid to terminate the protections.
