NextImg:Watch: Senate set to vote on funding bills as shutdown goes into effect

The Senate on Wednesday was set to take up another series of votes on legislation to fund the government, after a shutdown went into effect overnight.

The upper chamber of Congress on Tuesday, as expected, failed to approve a GOP-led stopgap to keep the lights on. Senators also rejected Democrats’ shorter alternative.

Republican leaders remained hopeful that they can sway the five Democrats needed to advance the continuing resolution that would end the shutdown and move the funding deadline to Nov. 21. Sens. Catherine Cortez Masto (D-Nev.), John Fetterman (D-Pa.) and Sen. Angus King (I-Maine), who caucuses with Democrats, voted in favor of the bill on Tuesday.

The voting was scheduled to begin around 11 a.m. EDT.
