House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-N.Y.) will give remarks Thursday morning as demonstrations sprout up nationwide in protest of President Trump’s sweeping immigration agenda.
Following U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) raids in Los Angeles, Jeffries hammered Trump over deploying military troops to quell protests, accusing the president of purposefully escalating tensions to distract the country from a volatile economy.
The Empire State lawmaker has also been an outspoken critic of Trump’s “big, beautiful” spending package, which has faced significant road bumps in the Senate. Democrats have torched the legislation for its sweeping cuts to Medicaid and extension of the president’s 2017 tax cuts — which the Congressional Budget Office (CBO) recently projected could add $2.4 trillion to the national deficit over a decade.
Jeffries’s remarks are scheduled to begin at 11:30 a.m. EDT.
