President Trump weighed in on the indictment of James Comey early Friday, accusing his former FBI director of lying and saying he left “zero” margin of error when he testified before Congress in 2020.
“Whether you like Corrupt James Comey or not, and I can’t imagine too many people liking him, HE LIED! It is not a complex lie, it’s a very simple, but IMPORTANT one,” Trump wrote in a post on Truth Social. “There is no way he can explain his way out of it.”
“He is a Dirty Cop, and always has been, but he was just assigned a Crooked Joe Biden appointed Judge, so he’s off to a very good start,” he added.
Comey, a longtime critic of Trump, was indicted Thursday by a federal grand jury on charges of making a false statement and obstruction of a congressional proceeding regarding his 2020 testimony to the Senate.
The indictment was brought by the office of the U.S. attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia. It came days after Trump called for the prosecution of those he perceives as political opponents.
Shortly after the news broke, Trump celebrated the development, while the former FBI chief proclaimed his innocence sand said he is not “afraid.”
Comey, who was fired by Trump in 2017 amid the FBI’s probe into Russian election interference, could face up to five years in prison if convicted. The indictment alleges he lied to lawmakers in 2020 while being asked about the investigation of the 2016 election.
“Comey stated that he did not authorize someone at the FBI to be an anonymous source. According to the indictment, that statement was false,” the Justice Department said in a statement Thursday.
Trump, in his Friday post, added that “nevertheless, words are words, and he wasn’t hedging or in dispute.”
“He was very positive, there was no doubt in his mind about what he said, or meant by saying it,” the president wrote. “He left himself ZERO margin of error on a big and important answer to a question. He just got unexpectedly caught.”
“James ‘Dirty Cop’ Comey was a destroyer of lives,” he continued, “He knew exactly what he was saying, and that it was a very serious and far reaching lie for which a very big price must be paid!”
The indictment was broadly hammered by Democrats on Capitol Hill, with Rep. Jamie Raskin (D-Md.), the top Democrat on the House Judiciary Committee, arguing Thursday night that there is “very little chance” Comey will be convicted.
