President Trump alluded Monday to assured conflict with Democratic mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani if the assembly member is elected New York’s 111th mayor.

“Self proclaimed New York City Communist, Zohran Mamdani, who is running for Mayor, will prove to be one of the best things to ever happen to our great Republican Party,” Trump said on Truth Social. “He is going to have problems with Washington like no Mayor in the history of our once great city. Remember, he needs the money from me, as President, in order to fulfill all of his fake communist promises. He won’t be getting any of it, so what’s the point of voting for him?”

Trump’s comments come a day after New York City Mayor Eric Adams (D) dropped out of the mayoral race, suspending a long-shot reelection campaign after being embroiled in controversies surrounding campaign finances and alleged bribery. The Justice Department dismissed the case against him earlier this year.

Mamdani has been garnering support from top Democratic leaders. Former Vice President Kamala Harris endorsed him last week, following New York Gov. Kathy Hochul (D) and Carl Heastie, Speaker of New York’s State Assembly. House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-N.Y.) has hinted at an impending endorsement.

Democrats were split about supporting Mamdani for months, saying his views are too far left, including criticizing Israel.

As of Sept. 22, Mamdani was leading by about 15 percentage points over former Gov. Andrew Cuomo, according to New York Times polling numbers. The election is Nov. 4.
