NextImg:Thune says Senate will work over weekend if Democrats don’t reopen government

Senate Majority Leader John Thune (R-S.D.) told reporters Wednesday that he plans to keep the Senate in session through the weekend if Democrats don’t reverse course and help advance a House-passed bill that would fund the government through Nov. 21, a proposal that has already failed twice on the Senate floor.

“We’ll probably have to be here if we’re going to keep voting to shut down,” Thune said, referring to the Democratic blockade of the House-passed funding bill.

The Senate will vote again Wednesday on a motion to advance the House bill, but Democrats are holding firm. They say they won’t reopen federal departments and agencies until Republicans agree to negotiate an extension of enhanced health care insurance premium subsidies, which are due to expire at the end of the year.

Thune, however, has said he will recess the Senate on Thursday in observance of Yom Kippur.

Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) told reporters at a press conference Wednesday morning that he won’t reconvene the House until next week, which means the House-passed continuing resolution remains the only legislative vehicle that could be used to reopen government in the next few days.
