NextImg:Thousands without power as powerful storm moves through New England

Hundreds of thousands of New England residents were left without power Monday morning as a powerful storm ripped through the region, bringing heavy rain and some flash flooding.

Just after 10:30 a.m. EST Monday, there were 121,118 Massachusetts customers out of power. Elsewhere in the region, there were 82,000 customers without power in Connecticut; 101,852 in Maine; 40,016 in New Hampshire; 47,830 in New York; and 46,412 in New Jersey.

The National Weather Service warned of high rates of local flooding as the storm moves northward.

“Widespread moderate to heavy rainfall will continue to stream northward, overrunning a warm front currently draped along the coastal areas from eastern [Virginia] through southern [Maine],” NWS said in its latest update.

The NWS further warned of a “narrow axis of marginal but sufficient instability” expected to develop on the coast. In parts of New Jersey through southern New York, Connecticut and western Massachusetts, there are the “highest probabilities of seeing intense rain rates” reaching or exceeding about 1 inch per hour.

“The combination of the prolonged rainfall and narrow window of higher rain rates is driving the flooding concern over the very urbanized corridor from northern [New Jersey], southern [New York], and portions of [Connecticut]/western [Massachusetts] where event totals may exceed [5 inches] locally,” the NWS said.

Many schools in the region were reportedly delayed as officials warned people to not drive through flooded areas.

Airports saw many flight delays in the area. More than 100 flights were canceled at Logan International Airport in Boston and more than 200 were delayed.
