Texas state Rep. James Talarico’s (D) Senate campaign said Wednesday it raised more than $6 million in its first three weeks, outraising former Rep. Colin Allred (D-Texas) in the state’s contested Democratic Senate primary.
According to Talarico’s campaign, the haul is the largest a Texas Senate candidate of any party has raised in their first quarter. The campaign said 98 percent of contributions were $100 hundred or less.
“We’re underdogs in this fight against billionaire mega-donors and their puppet politicians, but more than one hundred thousand people have answered the call to build a new kind of politics,” Talarico said in a statement.
Talarico jumped into the primary early last month.
Allred’s campaign also announced its third quarter haul Wednesday, bringing in more than $4.1 million since launching in July. The former congressman’s Senate campaign said the haul was powered by more than 100,000 grassroots donations, averaging just $32.
Both campaigns said they did not receive any corporate PAC money.
The fundraising hauls suggest the competitive Democratic Senate primary is heating up, particularly for Talarico, who has seen his national stock rise in recent months.
The Texas state representative, who flipped a GOP-held seat in 2018, has made headlines appearing on Joe Rogan’s podcast and invoking his faith in his messaging. Allred became the first major Democrat to enter the race in July less than a year after he lost his first Senate bid to Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas). Former astronaut Terry Virts entered the Democratic primary in June.
It’s unclear who the eventual Democratic nominee will face on the Republican side. Incumbent Sen. John Cornyn (R-Texas) is locked in a bitter primary battle with state Attorney General Ken Paxton.
