Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) said Sunday that he has “no faith in Donald Trump’s judicial system.”
During an interview with Schumer on NBC News’s “Meet the Press,” Kristen Welker noted former FBI Director James Comey’s recent indictment.
“Do you trust, do you have faith in the judicial system?” Welker asked Schumer after discussing the indictment.
“I have no faith in Donald Trump’s judicial system. He has turned this judicial system to be his own political fighter, do what he wants politically, so that he tells them to go after people he doesn’t like, he tells them to exonerate people that he likes,” Schumer responded, in a clip highlighted by Mediaite. “So many people are getting pardoned, and this and that. He has turned this Justice Department into his own political watchdog. It’s horrible.”
On Thursday, a federal grand jury indicted Comey, backing charges for a top adversary of the Trump administration, only days after President Trump pushed for the former FBI director’s prosecution.
Comey was hit with two federal charges, originating from testimony Comey gave before the Senate five years ago, while it was looking into investigations into links between Trump’s 2016 campaign and Russia.
Justice Department officials have painted the indictment as a step toward accountability, while Comey said Thursday his “heart is broken” for the department and that he is innocent.
When reached for comment, the Justice Department said it had “no comment beyond what the [attorney general] has said already.”
White House spokesperson Abigail Jackson said in an emailed statement to The Hill that the administration “will continue to deliver the truth to the American people and restore integrity to our justice system.”
“It is the ultimate hypocrisy to accuse President Trump of what Joe Biden actively did throughout his presidency: engaging in lawfare against his political opponents,” she added.
