Protestors heckled Rep. George Santos (R-N.Y.) as he exited a Long Island courtroom Friday, where he pleaded not guilty to 10 new federal charges of fraudulently inflating his campaign finance reports and charging donors’ credit cards without their knowledge or authorization.
“Hey, hey! Ho, ho! Santos has got to go!” protestors holding signs chanted as he exited the courtroom.
As he passed the protestors and made his way to his vehicle, some members of the crowd began to shout in his direction.
“You killed my dog, George!” one said.
“Put that liar in the fire,” another said, before she repeated the phrase, as if to begin a chant.
The protestors held a wide range of signs, including one that read, “Maga Republicans/ No honor. No integrity. No shame!” and another that read, “CONGRESS ALLOWS THIS!!”
The demonstration comes amid a wave of backlash from even within the Republican Party to oust Santos from Congress.
Santos was originally indicted in May on 13 charges over accusations that he misled donors, fraudulently received unemployment benefits and lied on House financial disclosures. He previously pleaded guilty to those charges.
His current court appearance comes after a superseding indictment revealed new charges against him earlier this month.
In Congress, Santos now faces increased pressure from his own party to leave. A group of fellow New York Republicans, after the superseding indictment was revealed earlier this month, publicly called for his expulsion — marking a change from their earlier resistance to the effort.
