California Gov. Gavin Newsom (D) took aim at President Trump on Thursday for airing his frustrations about a broken escalator while addressing the United Nations this week.
In a facetious post on social platform X, Newsom posted a seven-second video of a gold-rimmed escalator, which appeared to be stalled.
“A REAL DISGRACE,” Newsom wrote on X, along with the short clip. “Escalator was broken at Trump Tower today.”
“I’ve launched an investigation into this matter,” he added.
It was not immediately clear where and when the video was taken. The Hill has reached out to the governor’s office for clarity and comment.
The Trump Organization and the White House did not respond to immediate requests for comment.
Trump on Tuesday criticized the U.N. over escalator and teleprompter malfunctions at its New York headquarters while addressing the General Assembly.
As the president and first lady were making their way into the assembly, the escalator inside the building stopped working as soon as they stepped onto it. The first lady then began the walk up the stationary steps and Trump followed behind her.
“All I got from the United Nations was an escalator on the way up that stopped in the middle,” Trump later said in his remarks.
“If the first lady wasn’t in great shape, she would’ve fallen, but she’s in great shape. We’re both in good shape,” he said, prompting laughter. “And then a teleprompter that didn’t work. These are the two things I got from the United Nations — a bad escalator and a bad teleprompter, thank you very much.”
