Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office is criticizing Belgian Prime Minister Bart De Wever over his country’s decision to recognize the Palestinian state at the United Nations (UN) General Assembly.
“Belgian Prime Minister de Wever is a weak leader who seeks to appease Islamic terrorism by sacrificing Israel. He wants to feed the terrorist crocodile before it devours Belgium,” Netanyahu’s office said in a post on the social platform X on Wednesday morning.
In his own post on X Monday night, Belgian Foreign Minister Maxime Prevot said the humanitarian crisis in Gaza “in the face of the violence committed by Israel in violation of international law” had led Belgium to take actions to raise the pressure on Israel and Hamas.
Prevot’s statement also said Belgium had an international obligation to “prevent any risk of genocide.”
“This is not about sanctioning the Israeli people, but about ensuring that international and humanitarian law is respected by its government and acting in the hope of evolving the situation on the ground,” Prevot added.
Israel’s war in Gaza, which has resulted in mass death and destruction of infrastructure in the territory, will soon cross the two-year mark. The war began with Hamas’s deadly attack on Israel on Oct. 7, 2023.
Close to six in 10 Americans said the UN countries should recognize the Palestinian state in a recent survey. In the Reuters/Ipsos poll, 58 percent of U.S. adults thought that every country in the UN should acknowledge Palestine as a nation.
