Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth addressed the military’s top generals and admirals Tuesday morning in Quantico, Va., rolling out a 10-point plan to overhaul the culture of the military.
At the unprecedented meeting that pulled leaders from posts around the globe, he announced a shift to a merit-based culture with a return to “the highest male standard only.” And Hegseth emphasized the need to stick to strict fitness standards, calling it “completely unacceptable to see fat generals and admirals in the halls of the Pentagon leading commands around the country and the world.”
President Trump followed Hegseth, declaring his administration would make the military tougher through a record investment.
“Together over the next few years we’re going to make our military stronger, tougher, faster, fiercer and more powerful than it has ever been before,” he told the generals and admirals.
On the congressional side, with a White House meeting Monday yielding no deal that would keep the government open, and funding set to expire late Tuesday, a shutdown looks increasingly likely starting at midnight.
Democrats are demanding an extension of the enhanced health insurance subsidies, as well as other health care provisions, in exchange for their votes to keep the government open.
The Senate will hold a procedural vote later Tuesday on a stopgap funding measure.
