(NewsNation) — Footage of a great white shark has gone viral after a drone spotted it swimming near some popular beaches around Scarborough, Maine, on Monday.
The 10-to-12-foot shark was spotted just off the coast of Pine Point Beach, according to the Scarborough Police Department. The drone footage, captured by David Lancaster, shows the shark swimming just below the surface with its dorsal fin sticking out of the water.
CBS News reports that the sighting was in the same area of Maine where a woman was fatally attacked by a shark five years ago.
The drone footage marks the latest shark sighting in the waters along the northeast coast of the U.S. in recent weeks. NewsNation local affiliate WPRI reports that a great white shark measuring nearly 14 feet long and more than 1,600 pounds was spotted off the coast of Nantucket. In response to shark sightings becoming more common near Long Island, Nassau County officials have announced they would be stepping up patrols for tiger sharks.
