Disney is raising the price of its streaming services in October, a hike that comes as the company prepares to bring back one of its biggest Hollywood stars, late-night comedian Jimmy Kimmel, this week.
Starting next month, a basic Disney+ plan with ads will be raised to $11.99 per month, with a premium subscription with no ads running customers $18.99 per month.
A source familiar with the streamer confirmed to The Hill the increase, which had been in the works before Kimmel’s show was pulled off the air on Wednesday, would be communicated to customers this week.
Disney suspended Kimmel last week over comments the host made about the killing of conservative activist Charlie Kirk.
The massive media conglomerate called Kimmel’s comments “insensitive” and said it pulled him off the air “to avoid further inflaming a tense situation at an emotional moment for the country.”
Kimmel’s suspension sparked backlash from some critics, and calls for boycotts from top names in media like Howard Stern and John Oliver.
Disney is just the latest in a string of entertainment companies to jack up the price of its marquee streaming services. Netflix, YouTube TV and Paramount have all announced price increases in recent financial quarters.
Like all major media companies, Disney is under increasing pressure to transfer audiences to streaming as more consumers cut cable and turn away from linear broadcast assets.
