Late-night comedians Jimmy Kimmel and Stephen Colbert on Tuesday shared stories of being pulled off the air, temporarily for Kimmel and permanently for Colbert, starting next year.
During an appearance on “Jimmy Kimmel Live,” Colbert explained how he learned his show was being canceled by Paramount, CBS’s parent company, a move that was celebrated by President Trump.
“It’s their ball, and they can take it home if they want,” he said of CBS.
Tuesday’s appearance was the first interview Colbert has given since “The Late Show” was canceled.
The network said earlier this summer that the decision was a financially necessary one, though critics of the company have pointed to the host’s frequent criticism of Trump and his allies.
Kimmel was suspended by ABC earlier this month over comments he made about the death of conservative activist Charlie Kirk, before being reinstated last week.
“The more I get to know you, the more I admire you as a leader, I know you as a friend, and here’s something I didn’t know, is that you’re funny,” Colbert said to Kimmel.
Kimmel shared a photo of the two hosts on a fishing trip, before sharing another picture of himself and NBC late-night host Jimmy Fallon, recalling a birthday text Colbert sent to Fallon shortly after Kimmel’s suspension that read in part, “It’s pretty selfish of you to have a birthday right now, given how divided the country is.”
