(KTLA) – In an appearance at a Spanish movie festival, Angelina Jolie said that she doesn’t “recognize” the U.S.

She was asked by a member of the press at the San Sebastián International Film Festival in northern Spain what she was “afraid of as an artist and as an American” in regard to a “concerning period” surrounding free speech in the United States.

“I love my country, but I don’t, at this time, recognize my country,” she responded after considering the “very difficult” question for a few moments.

The “Changeling” star also said that she and her family have always spent time living abroad while mentioning she understands that censorship can be “very dangerous.”

“My family is international. My friends, my life, my worldview, is equal, united, international,” Jolie said. “Anything, anywhere that divides or…limits personal expressions and freedoms from anyone is very dangerous.”

“I think these are such serious times that we have to be careful not to say things casually. So I’ll be careful in a press conference,” she added. “But these are very, very heavy times.”

Jolie attended the festival for a showing of her latest film “Couture,” directed by Alice Winocour.

The festival began Sept. 19 and runs until Sept. 27.
