Three of the inmates who escaped from a New Orleans jail earlier this month were captured on Monday, leaving two of 10 escapees at large.
One of the latest escapees rearrested after the May 16 jailbreak was found in Baton Rouge, La., by local police, while two others were located near Houston in neighboring Texas, Louisiana State Police announced Monday.
The two inmates still on the lam are Derrick Groves, 27, who was convicted for the murders of two people in the city’s 2018 Mardi Gras day shooting; and Antoine T. Massey, 31, who was being held on domestic abuse and car theft charges.
“Antoine and Derrick — you are NEXT!” Louisiana Gov. Jeff Landry (R) posted Monday night on the social platform X.
Meanwhile, multiple people have been arrested in connection with allegedly assisting the inmates with or after their jailbreak.
Sterling Williams, a 33-year-old maintenance worker at the jail, was arrested last week after he admitted to turning off the water in the cell from which the escapees made their jailbreak via a hole behind a toilet fixture.
Authorities announced Monday they also have arrested Diamond White, 21, for principle to aggravated escape and obstruction of justice; and Lenika Vanburen, 28, Tyshanea Randolph, 27, Patricia Vanburen, 18, Angel McKay, 41, and Lenton Vanburen Sr., 48, on accessory after the fact charges.
Landry ordered the state attorney general to launch an investigation into the jailbreak and the courts’ handling of violent criminals in the city.
Multiple agencies have offered rewards, hoping tipsters will help them capture the seven missing inmates. The total bounty now stands at up to $20,000 for information leading to the apprehension of any of the escapees.
