One person is dead and multiple people are injured after shooting broke out after the Kansas City Chiefs’ rally celebrating the team’s Sunday Super Bowl win, the Kansas City Fire Department confirmed to The Hill.

The shooting occurred around Union Station, near the parking garage, as fans were leaving. The Kansas City Police Department said it took two people into custody for further investigation.

Children’s Mercy hospital is treating 12 patients from the rally; 11 are children and nine have gunshot wounds, according to the statement obtained by The Hill.

Three people have been detained and 22 people have gunshot wounds, and police have recovered at least one firearm, Kansas City Policy Department Chief Stacey Graves said during a Wednesday press conference.

University Health is treating eight victims with gunshot wounds from Union Station, two of those are in critical condition. The hospital is treating four others who have non-gunshot injuries, per University Health’s Keith King statement to The Hill.

“We need people to exit the area as quickly and safely as possible and avoid the parking garage in order to facilitate treatment of shooting victims,” the police said in a statement following the incident.

The Kansas City Chiefs released a statement saying all of their players, coaches, staff and families are safe. The team is in communication with law enforcement and the mayor’s office.

“Our hearts go out to the victims, their families, and all of Kansas City,” the team posted on X, the platform formerly known as Twitter. “We thank the law enforcement officers and first responders who we on-scene to assist.”

Kansas Gov. Laura Kelly (D) said she had been at the event but was safe.

“At the end of the Chiefs rally, shots were fired near Union Station,” Kelly wrote on X. “I have been evacuated and am out of harm’s way. I encourage everyone to follow instructions and updates from @kcpolice. Please stay safe.”

President Biden has been briefed on the shooting and will continue getting updates from state and local leaders, according to the White House. Federal law enforcement is also on the scene to support local authorities, it said.

Missouri Gov. Mike Parson (R) and his wife were in attendance when the shooting occurred. Both are safe, according to his office.

“State law enforcement personnel are assisting local authorities in response efforts,” he posted on X. “As we wait to learn more, our hearts go out to the victims.”
